Insomnia

I turned around and found myself looking right into Sven’s face. He squinted at me. “Usually, the reaction I get from people I haven’t met before is stronger than this. Your eyes are familiar. Do I know you?”

He looked down at me, then at Bebe. His gnarled brows crinkled. “The cat. I know that cat.”

“Fuck you, murdering asshole!” Bebe swatted at Sven, her claw skimming his gnarled skin. I clutched her closer to me.

“What about it?” Havoc strode toward us, catching my arm as he approached, and dragged me into the house.

“I know that cat,” Sven said. “Havoc, wait.”

Surprising me, Havoc did as the strange tree man asked. “What is it, old one? A new rhyme for me to decipher? A new lead? I want you to go to Han and tell him I have his mate. We will meet tomorrow morning. A truce for a discussion regarding her.”

Sven was circling me, though. “Why is that cat in her arms? That cat came with the shelter dog.” He shook his finger at Havoc, as if the monstrous man had been naughty. “This woman might very well be his mate, but Han has not been spending time with her. There is no way I wouldn’t have noticed a dark beauty. You know she is not his type. He prefers them as pale and fair as the day, not…not like her.”

Havoc put his nose to my hair, and I went still, those shivers running through me again in a way I most certainly did not like. He huffed a few times, my hair fluttering under his hot breath as he breathed in deep. “Maybe he hasn’t been fucking her when you’re around, old one. But his scent is all over her. She’s been in his bed, I guarantee it.”

Sven stared hard at me. “I know you, somehow. But neither you nor the cat fit. I have been with Han—”

“Except when you are here,” Claire said. “Men are sneaky bastards, Sven. He’s been cheating on you.”

The pack laughed at that, and Sven rolled his eyes.

I, on the other hand, agreed with Claire. Men were sneaky bastards. Sven included.

I had nothing to say to all that. Even if I could talk, would they believe me? I doubted it. They thought I was a werewolf, not a golden retriever.

Havoc shook his head. “You are losing it, old one. Go. Tell Han to meet me on the steps of this house first thing in the morning.”

Morning. I’d be a golden again. I reached out for Havoc, wanting to hurry him up, but how.

I touched his arm at the wrist, and he whipped his hand around to grab my forearm. He was like a wild animal, edgy as fuck and ready to kill first and ask questions never. I moved slowly and touched my own wrist with a finger, tapping it.

Sooner, he needed to bring Han sooner.

Havoc’s fingers dug harder into my flesh. “I’m not hurrying anything for you or your bastard of a mate.” He growled, but he did not let me go.
